Aliko Dangote speaks often and plainly. Here are his main ideas, gathered from his speeches and interviews between 2024 and 2026, in our own words with short quotes where his exact words matter.
His group's turning point was 1996, when it moved from trading into manufacturing. He argues that no country has become rich without industrialising, and that growth without industry is not transformation.
Africa exports raw materials and imports finished goods. His formula: Africa must "consume what it produces, process what it extracts" and trade more with itself.
He insists that local investors must move before foreign ones follow, and that African entrepreneurs should stop taking their money abroad. African savings and pension funds, he says, should finance African development.
At the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali (2024) he said he needed 35 visas to travel Africa on his Nigerian passport — while a European passport moves more freely across the continent. He has called again and again for visa-free travel for all Africans and for full use of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Only around 14–17% of Africa's trade is within Africa, compared with about 70% in Europe. Trade agreements alone do not build industries, he argues; industries build trade.
"We should not look at ourselves as if we cannot make it. We can." The promise is enormous, he says; the task is to turn it into reality.
